Counseling
My counseling practice is based on being with you in your emotional world and helping you explore this world, particularly understanding “what happened to you” and “what is happening to you.” I incorporate attachment, NMT, solution-focused therapy, neuroscience, EMDR, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, reflective practices, and more into our time together. I believe we all do our best in all places, at all times, and with all people. We cannot change the past. Together, we organize your feelings on the past while safely exploring a new present and future.

Most Recent Project
I was mentored by Dr Bruce Perry , a national expert in child trauma and developer of the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (aka “Brain Mapping”) as part of the National Quality Improvement Center for Adoption and Guardianship Support and Preservation (QIC-AG). Stein Counseling was one of only eight sites selected nationally. The project was a five-year project working with the eight sites to implement evidence-based interventions or develop and test promising practices which, if proven effective, can be replicated or adapted in other child welfare jurisdictions. Effective interventions are expected to achieve long-term, stable permanence in adoptive and guardianship homes for waiting for children as well as children and families after adoption or guardianship has been finalized. I am the first and only Certified NMT Mentor in Wisconsin I completed certification training in the Neurosequential Model of Reflective Supervision with Dr. Kristi Brandt.
STEIN COUNSELING BECOMES THE FIRST AGENCY IN WISCONSIN WITH A CERTIFIED NMT MENTOR
MAGNIFYING OUR IMPACT BY TRAINING OTHER PROFESSIONALS IN THE NEUROSEQUENTIAL MODEL OF THERAPEUTICS™
Stein Counseling proudly announces that Ted Stein, Chief Executive Officer at Stein Counseling, has completed The Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics™ (NMT) Training Certification through the Phase III/Mentor level. The mentor level of certification is the highest level of NMT certification an individual can receive, and Ted is currently the only individual in Wisconsin to have received this achievement.
Stein Counseling’s overarching philosophy is based on the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics. Developed by Dr. Bruce Perry, NMT is a trauma-informed, developmentally sensitive approach to understanding the impact of a child’s history on current functioning. Guided by NMT, Stein Counseling moves vulnerable children toward hope by delivering comprehensive therapeutic and educational services to support biological, foster, and adoptive families. We also use this with adults!
“Stein Counseling is leading the way in selecting, implementing, testing, and standardizing the best tools and methods for the treatment of childhood trauma. We are proud to have the opportunity to offer this innovative and highly sought-after training for other providers locally, regionally, and nationally.” – Ted Stein
The Mentor level of certification allows Ted to provide mentor-led training to other professionals in the NMT model. Stein Counseling is focused on expanding training opportunities and developing programming that will generate practice-based data to inform prevention and treatment of developmental trauma. Stein Counseling will serve as the regional hub for understanding developmental trauma by providing comprehensive, high-quality training for parents, professionals, educators, and others who work with children impacted by abuse, neglect, and trauma.
The Neurosequential Network acknowledges that Ted Stein has completed NMT Training Certification through the Phase III/Mentor level. For more information on NMT Training Certification and the NMT Assessment Process, click here
